Overcoming Problems in Play

HEAT EXHAUSTION

Heavy outdoor play in summer, such as pony carting or slave-racing; play in a club overheated by glowing bodies; any activity in tightly fitting impermiable covering; any or all of these could lead unexpectedly to heat exhaustion in a Dom/me or sub. The condition usually develops gradually and is caused by loss of salt and water through sweating.

So let us consider what we can do to ensure safety and enjoyment

Be aware of the danger! Especially if conditions are cool when you first start to play.
Remember that alcohol or a heavy meal, especially if it includes lots of meat, draw water from the body that may be needed for other systems to work effectively
Learn the signs and symptoms
Ensure that both sub and Dom/me regularly drink small quantities of water during a session
Do you know how to give First Aid if required? (mainly a case cooling the casualty and replacing lost water and salt)
Do you know what to do if a casualty becomes unconcious?
- In most cases the sufferer will recover completely and quite quickly, if given proper treatment. Ensure that they rest for a while anyway until FULLY recovered!
What will you do if your partner becomes too distressed or unable to explain clearly what he/she needs?

- stop play, something is going wrong. Evaluate if the simple stopping and care will be enough or whether medical advice is needed
Do you know at which point medical attention is necessary?
Does your partner care enough to take a close interest in all of the preceding questions?
